Frequently Asked Questions
I started this blog in April of 2012, and over the years I have a received a lot of emails. Below are some of the most Frequently Asked Questions I have received.
Do you sell any of the projects that you make?
I have sold items in the past, but unfortunately I have closed my online store and no longer sell items.
Where do you get your ideas for the projects you make?
It varies widely. I really enjoy reading wood magazine, and flipping through project books. Frequently, I will make something that I found in a book. If I do make something like that I always include a link in my posting of where you can find that book for yourself. If you do make something from an existing plan don’t be afraid to customize it for yourself and make it your own.
What type of woodworking training have you had?
To date I have been completely self-taught. I have never had so much as a high school wood-shop class. I have attended some wood shows where they discuss techniques and best practices; which I highly recommend. Also, I belong to a local woodworking club (the Central Indiana Wood Workers Association) which is always a great resource for questions. Woodworking shouldn’t be intimidating, so pick up a book, watch a few videos on YouTube and go for it. You’ll be glad you did.
Tools, Tools, Tools...?
I get a LOT of questions about specific tools and my opinions on them. I do have some tool reviews on the site where I try to be as fair and impartial as possible, but I simply haven’t had a large number of tools to review to give much advice on.
What equipment and software do you use to make your videos?
I shoot the videos I make with a Nikon D5300 camera. I really like this camera, and it allows for more wide area shots which are great. For the audio I use a Rode VideoMic Pro. The Rode Pro Microphone is great for what I use it for. A little pricey, but worth it. For lighting I use two Softbox Lights that I picked up from Cowboy Studio. Most of the shooting I do is an enclosed garage at night, so getting the lighting right has always been a little tricky for me. For video editing I have used Microsoft’s free Movie Maker software, but I have been using Power Director version 11 for a while now and it seems to do everything I need.
Is woodworking your full-time job?
Nope, just a hobby. While I really enjoy woodworking it’s just a hobby that I’m really passionate about.
How long have you been woodworking?
I started woodworking back in 2000. I still consider myself a beginner(well maybe an advanced beginner), and really enjoy learning from others. The main reason I started this blog was to share what I have learned with others.
Where did the name ''WoodLogger'' come from?
The name started as Wood Blogger, but unfortunately that URL was taken. Logger was then simply a play on words Logging my changes, or Logger. That’s it..! I have nothing to do with the timber industry…..
What web hosting service do you use for your site?
I use HostGator for hosting my site.
Is it okay to make or sell items from the plans you have posted?
I have a few free plans that I have made over the years that are posted on the site. You are free to sell anything you make, except copies of the actual plans themselves.
